The patch (Download PSP CFW) allows users to run homebrew applications and games on their PSP without any issues which Sony prevents at the moment. The patch includes bug fixes in the previous version of PSP Custom Firmwares.

Ok guys here goes...I have tried multiple times to get up to speed with the Homebrew thing but gave up! I have the original PSP 1000 with 2.7 PSP firmware running, (never beeen moded)can anyone help me get on the path to Homebrew? With this 5.0 update and patch do you need a game like GTA to get homebrew working? Instructions for adding CFW to a PSP is all over the net, namely QJ.net. Also, why wouldn't you want to use4 a Pandora battery to update? It's the easiest way and once you are done you can simply turn it back to a normal battery.

Just search how to make a pandora battery. it's possible to make 1 just by scratching a little part in the battery, but make sure you have another first.

So many n00bs around! Theres enough info here for people to go by without having to ask 'how do i play free games' its simple, and its NOT a downgrade..... seriously.... search the net, and ffs ask how to mod your psp and not 'how do i play free games' remember its a 'developing' mod!! ;p and.... if you even cant find the info on how to do this, then i wouldnt even bother trying to install it and risk bricking the psp, cos your obviously the sort of person that does need to use a UMD.... sorry, but it is true...

Definition of Terms:
1. OFW = OFFICIAL FIRMWARE (not yet hacked)
2. CFW= Custom FIRMWARE (hacked version)
HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR PSP IS OFW or CFW?
=go to your psp settings, look for the version there
= if you see that it says "VERSION 3.7" or something,the word "version" and along with just the number "3.7" or some other number,it is OFW.
=if you see a number along with some letters after it (for example, 3.40 OE-A or 3.7 m33-2) and WITHOUT the word "version" along with it, then it is CFW and it is already hacked

Just purchased the PSP 3000 and am so bummed that it can't be easily hacked. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Dark Alex will be able to work his magic on the new PSP's.
I mainly got it for all the cool homebrew stuff you could do. I guess I should have kept up on how the hacking of the newer PSP's was going.
Might still end up buying the old fat PSP cause it seems way easy to hack.

So much misinformation, but it is true that if you have an Sony released firmware on your psp, weather or not you have ever had a custom firmware, you will need a pandora battery to flash to any custom firmware. Keep in mind of course that many 2000 and all 3000 psps are currently not modable in any way by the general public, but there is hope...

me and my friend bought psp a month ago...i bought psp2000 while he bought psp3000 he said its cheaper and LCD is better...but in my delight, it turned out that i had the best buy...his psp sucks only plays UMD while me i can use iso and cso. good work sony.......i will trade better LCD to more games anyday.

I think I forgot my current firmware version on my last post. I have a psp3001 with 5.01 firmware. I need step-by-step instructions on how to downgrade my firmware to be able to use all the cool hacks. one of the hacks is the PSPORTAL (winxp).
Ok - there is no custom firmware currently available for a new PSP 3000 - they have the new motherboard on them and cannot be hacked.
If you have an older 3000, 2000 or 1001 you can still do this downgrade using a Pandora Battery (google these words and there are dozens of site offering both a modded battery and a magic stick for around $15). You'll need these to downgrade your PSP. Does not matter what version you had before - the stick will do the work for you.
Some need to have a certain version already loaded - speak to the supplier of the Modded battery (Pandora) BEFORE purchse. Good Luck.

you need pandora...but you are better off going to 3.71-m33-2, 4.01 m33 , 4.01 m33-2 , 5.00 m33 , 5.00 m33-4 and then use network update and install the latest 5.00 m33-6 also add the 150k installer even if you dont need it....
also add the firmwares in that order
if you need to know the setting in the m33 recovery menu so that everything will work perfect with no hic ups
